[shadow=red,left,300]Asian gang guilty of campus murder[/shadow]
An Asian gang who kicked and stamped a computer worker to death at a university campus before bragging "we killed a white man" were today (tues) found guilty of murder at the Old Bailey.
Christopher Yates, 30, out celebrating a friend's birthday, was set upon by the three men who knocked him to the ground before kicking and stamping on him as if they were "playing football."
The trio were overheard to have said 'that will teach a white man to interfere in Paki business' after the murder in a car park of a university campus.
Mr Yates, a data inputter, had just seen a female friend onto a bus to make sure she got home safely after going out for her birthday when he was set upon at the Barking campus of the University of East London by Zahid Bashir, 23, Imran Maqsood, 21 and Sajid Zulfiqar, 25.
The trio kicked him repeatedly and stamped on his head, leaving him fatally injured in the street before fleeing the scene.
But their violence spree continued, during the early hours of November 7 last year, leaving a wake of smashed cars, threatening a householder and then assaulting a curry waiter and a passer-by in nearby Ilford.
The three, who fled to Yorkshire, were overheard being more worried about being exposed as having been drunk during the Holy month of Ramadan than being caught for the killing.
Earlier prosecutor Anthony Leonard QC told the court: "It is not possible to say what caused the attack to take place. It was on any view a ferocious attack - after he was felled to the ground he was kicked about the body and head and his head was stamped on with some force.
"He was kicked violently. Whatever caused them to attack him, drink played a part."
The court heard that people on the campus had witnessed the attack and been able to identify some of the defendants, including Zulfiqar - referred to as 'the fat Pakistani'.
Mr Leonard said: "The three defendants were stood round the deceased and began to kick him and stamp on him once he had fallen to the ground. One witness likened the noises he heard to someone playing football - he could hear kicking and stamps.
"A teenage girl heard the fat Pakistani - Zulfiqar - saying 'we killed a white man'."
Maqsood, of Richmond Road, Zulfiqar, of Sunnyside Road, and Bashir, of Meath Road, all Ilford, are due to be sentenced on Thursday.
