The UK has the 4th richest economy in the world but in spite of this millions are affected by poverty. Although poverty is an emotive word there are real statistical methods by which poverty can be measured.
According to a 2004 report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies in 2002/03, 12.4 million individuals, a fifth of the population, lived in households with incomes below 60 per cent of the median, measuring incomes after housing costs, down from 13.9 million in 1996/7. Last year the housing charity Shelter said that one million schoolchildren were suffering in sub standard housing with consequences for their health, education and development.
While the statistics may be shocking in themselves there are always questions about the accuracy, authenticity and reliability but the truth is that for millions day to day life is a battle to exist with low pay, poor housing, rising debt and few opportunities to escape those conditions. However for some the BNP is able to offer a helping hand, we exist to help our own communities and hard working Keighley Councillor Angela Clarke takes up her story how she managed to get a young British family re-housed. Unlike Labour who have abandoned the white working class, the BNP really does care and our representatives takes their responsibilities very seriously.
Accommodation problems
A young couple recently contacted me regarding the accommodation they were living in. They are sharing a one bedroomed flat with two young girls under the age of 5 - one of the girls is 3 months old and the other is 16 month old.
I paid a visit to the family and to my horror the smell of mould hit me as I walked into the hall way, I could see what horrific conditions they were living in before they began to tell me of their complaints to B.C.H.T.(Bradford Community Housing Trust).
Labour advice
Laura and Michael have been living in this flat for 3 years. When they made a phone call to Ann Cryer, the local Labour MP, a spokesman for her advised Laura and Michael that they could stay in the flat until the girls were 16 yeara old! The young couple were horrified with this “advice” so contacted the BNP.
I acted on this immediately - the flat was full of mould, the babies cot and the youngest baby’s Moses basket was full of mould. There was barely enough room to walk in the bedroom they all shared as it was cramped with a double bed, a cot and a Moses basket and a double wardrobe which had clothes full of mould in it. The living room was far too small for two adults and two children to live in, as the oldest child is 16 month old she is in the stages of crawling about, as there were only three foot of walking space it is very unhealthy for a child of this age not to get the growing space they need.
Hospitalised baby
The 3 month old baby has developed a nasty chesty cough, to which I advised the couple to take her to the doctors as this could have been caused by excessive condensation from too many sharing a bedroom. The baby was rushed into hospital the same day with bronchitis where she was made to stay for 3 days for monitoring.
On leaving the hospital the family was told by the hospital doctor that the baby had to stay on inhalers for the foreseeable future, again this was due to excessive condensation in the flat.
The oldest child had banged her head on the radiator as it was next to the cot and received a nasty bruise, I contacted B.C.H.T and asked to speak to the manager. I told her of the disgusting circumstances the family were living in, and that nobody this day and age should have to live like this. I advised her that the Environmental Health Officer had been to see the family and she would be receiving a letter from that department.
New home offered
The Environmental Health Officer was disgusted with the conditions this family was living and thanked me for getting him involved.
Just under a week from making my telephone call to the housing office the young couple rang me to tell me the housing officer had been to visit them and had offered them a three bedroomed house, which they are delighted with and will be moving in shortly.
Here is the video that BNPTV filmed as I did the interview. ;D
